Making group portraits interesting can be difficult. Meeting these three joyful young women pointed me towards an informal composition.
The painting was for the key wall in the key room in this Central London home. The Cornish abstract painters, such as Patrick Heron and Terry Frost came to mind.
I found a step ladder and asked the three sisters to lie down on the grass outside. Immediately their bond of friendship and unity proved I was going in a good direction. They held each other's hands and a symmetry appeared.
They did not need much adjustment of their clothing. I changed the color of a tee-shirt.
